For the first time, 28 Azerbaijani universities are represented in the Times Higher Education Impact 2025 ranking

The results of the “THE Impact 2025” rankings, compiled by one of the world's most respected ranking agencies, Times Higher Education (THE), have been announced (https://www.timeshighereducation.com/impactrankings). The rankings assess university performance across 18 ranking tables, covering 17 areas and an overall ranking. They are based on universities' contributions to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).   The number of Azerbaijani universities represented in this year's ranking increased from 18 to 28. This means an increase of 1.5 times compared to last year.  Twenty-five out of the mentioned 28 universities are included in the overall ranking.   This represents approximately 60 per cent of all higher education institutions operating in the country. By way of comparison, this figure ranges from 5 to 35 per cent on average in the South Caucasus and Central Asia region. In this respect, Azerbaijan's result is remarkable in both regional and international contexts.   Baku State University and Khazar University achieved the best results for Azerbaijan in the overall ranking, both ranking within the 401–600 range. Azerbaijan State Economic University and the Baku Higher School of Oil were second in the country in the overall ranking (range 801–1000).   Overall, Azerbaijan maintains its position as a regional leader for five SDGs in this ranking. Notably, Azerbaijani universities were ranked among the top 60 in the world for SDG 1 (Eradicating Poverty) and SDG 10 (Reducing Inequality).

Kanan Karimzade delivered a speech at the 6th International Educational Technologies Summit in Istanbul

On 21 June, Kanan Karimzade, the deputy minister of science and education of the Republic of Azerbaijan, spoke at the 6th International Educational Technologies Summit held in Istanbul, the Republic of Türkiye.   The deputy minister provided information on the reforms being implemented in the Republic of Azerbaijan in the fields of science and education, the development of technology-based education models, the integration of artificial intelligence into education, as well as the steps being taken towards teaching digital skills.   Kanan Karimzade also emphasized that artificial intelligence, biotechnology, energy technologies and digital transformation have been identified as priority areas in the country's scientific and innovation agenda.   In his speech, Mr. Karimzade highlighted the successful continuation of strategic cooperation between Azerbaijan and Türkiye in science and education, emphasizing that the TEKNOFEST festival, held in Azerbaijan in 2024, is a vivid example of this partnership.   The deputy minister also reported on initiatives aimed at improving  the positions of the country's higher education institutions in international rankings, cooperation with local and international technology partners in developing large language models, and the creation of the “SABAH.city” innovation cluster.   In conclusion, Kanan Karimzade emphasized the important role of such authoritative international platforms in strengthening global cooperation in education and expressed his gratitude to Yusuf Tekin, Minister of National Education of the Republic of Türkiye, for the invitation to the event and for his hospitality.

Deputy Minister Kanan Karimzade attends 6th International Education Technologies Summit in Istanbul

The 6th International Education Technologies Summit kicked off on 20 June in Istanbul, Türkiye. Organized by the Ministry of National Education of the Republic of Türkiye, the summit focuses on such crucial topics as digital transformation, application of artificial intelligence, future learning models, and opportunities for international cooperation.   The event brings together education ministers from various countries, prominent international experts, and representatives of leading technology institutions. Deputy Minister of Science and Education Kanan Karimzade participates in the summit on behalf of the Ministry of Science and Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan. The summit aims to facilitate the exchange of knowledge and experience in educational technologies and to establish a multilateral platform for expanding partnership opportunities.   The President of the Republic of Türkiye, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, delivered a speech at the opening of the Summit. He emphasized the importance of using technology and artificial intelligence in education, while stressing the need to preserve moral and intellectual values. His speech resonated widely, emphasizing the need for a balanced and sustainable approach to educational reforms. Participants exchanged views on critical topics such as preventing digital violence, the ethical use of artificial intelligence, the introduction of new technologies in education, and integrating future generations into the technological world.   It should be mentioned that the international summit will run until 22 June.

The deputy minister addressed the 14th session of the Joint Intergovernmental Commission on Cooperation between Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan

On 20 June, Firudin Gurbanov, the Deputy Minister of Science and Education, participated in the 14th session of the Joint Intergovernmental Commission on Cooperation between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Uzbekistan.   At a session at the Ministry of Economy, Deputy Minister Firudin Gurbanov emphasized that the strategic partnership between Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan is based on the political will of the heads of two states, historically developing fraternal relations, and agreements reached between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Uzbekistan. It was noted that there are broad opportunities for expanding cooperation in the fields of science and education, implementing joint projects, and exchanging experience.   During the Joint Intergovernmental Commission session, there were also extensive discussions on issues related to the diversification of trade and economic ties, the promotion of investment, the current state and prospects for further development of cooperation in the fields of industry, energy, agriculture and other areas.   The co-chairs of the Joint Intergovernmental Commission – Azerbaijan’s Minister of Economy Mikayil Jabbarov and Uzbekistan’s Minister of Investments, Industry, and Trade, Laziz Kudratov, delivering speeches at the session, highly valued the efforts made to strengthen the strategic partnership between the two countries and exchanged views on expanding cooperation into new areas.   At the end of the event, a Protocol summarizing the outcomes of the session was signed by the co-chairs of the Joint Intergovernmental Commission.

For the first time 6 Azerbaijani universities entered the TOP-1000 best universities in the world

For the first time in the country's history, six Azerbaijani universities have entered the TOP 1000 of QS 2026 ranking of the best universities in the world. The total number of Azerbaijani universities in this ranking has increased to 9.   The positions of three universities have significantly strengthened compared to last year. Six of our universities were included in the aforementioned global ranking for the first time.   The Baku State University, which received the highest score in the country, was ranked 688th, rising by almost 300 positions. The positions of the Azerbaijan State University of Economics (801-850) and the Azerbaijan State University of Petroleum & Industry (851-900) have increased significantly compared to last year.   For the first time, the Azerbaijan Technical University (851-900), the Baku Engineering University (901-950) and the Khazar University (951-1000) entered the TOP 1000 of the QS 2026 Ranking of the best universities in the world.   The Azerbaijan University of Architecture & Civil Engineering (1001-1200), the Sumgait State University (1001-1200) and ADA University (1201-1400) were also included in this global ranking for the first time. In terms of the number of universities newly included in this ranking, Azerbaijan ranks 2nd among 106 represented countries!   Positive dynamics is observed in the indicators of Azerbaijani universities in terms of "academic prestige", "prestige among employers", "ratio of teachers to students", "proportion of foreign teachers", "proportion of foreign students" and "employment results".   It should be noted that, according to the results of the QS 2026 World University Rankings, Azerbaijan has become a leader in the South Caucasus region. The number of universities from Azerbaijan included in the ranking is three times higher than the total number of universities from other countries in the region combined.

As part of the “Global Congress on Sustainable Development”, Emin Amrullayev visited the Azerbaijani pavilion

On 18 June, Emin Amrullayev, Azerbaijan's Minister of Science and Education, visited the national pavilion at the “Global Congress on Sustainable Development (GSDC 2025)”, being held in Istanbul, Türkiye. Azerbaijan's leading higher education institutions were represented in the pavilion.   Azerbaijan was represented in the pavilion by a number of leading higher education institutions. In particular, Baku State University, Azerbaijan State University of Oil and Industry, Azerbaijan State Economic University, Azerbaijan Technical University, Azerbaijan University of Architecture and Construction, Baku Engineering University, Nakhchivan State University, Sumgait State University, Karabakh University, Khazar University, Baku Higher School of Oil and Azerbaijan Medical University were represented in the pavilion.   The universities presented their research and development projects focusing on environmental protection and sustainable development, as well as their achievements in applied and innovative technologies. Participants were provided with informative information about the projects and educational initiatives being implemented.   It should be noted that the congress is attended by more than 5000 delegates from over 100 countries.

The Ministry of Science and Education leadership held a meeting with the leadership of “City Hong Kong” University and the “Asia Greentech” Foundation

As part of the ‘Global Congress on Sustainable Development’ held in Istanbul, Türkiye, Minister of Science and Education Emin Amrullaev met with Freddy Boey, President of the City University of Hong Kong, and Michael Ngai, Chairman of the Asia Greentech Fund. Phil Baty, Director General for Global Affairs at “Times Higher Education”, an international rating agency, and Ulker Sattarova, Director of the State Agency for Science and Higher Education also attended the meeting.   During the meeting, the parties discussed possible prospects for co-operation.

Azerbaijan's experience in science and education was presented at the “Global Congress of Sustainable Development”

The official opening ceremony of the “Global Congress of Sustainable Development” took place on 17 June in Istanbul, Türkiye.   Minister of Science and Education Emin Amrullayev, who attended the opening ceremony, took part in a discussion on the Azerbaijani experience.   During the discussion moderated by Phil Baty, Director General for Global Affairs at “Times Higher Education”, Emin Amrullayev answered questions about the opportunities opened up for the development of science and education in Azerbaijan after Azerbaijan's hosting of such a prestigious international event as COP29. Emin Amrullayev also touched upon issues such as the work being done on sustainable development in our tertiary institutions, supporting climate research, developing green skills, building global partnerships in this area and increasing international visibility.   It should be noted that more than 5000 delegates from more than 100 countries around the world are represented at this congress.

The Deputy Minister meets with a delegation from the Ministry of National Education of Türkiye

On June 17, Deputy Minister of Science and Education Kanan Karimzade met with the delegation led by Salih Kaygusuz, Director General of Vocational and Technical Education of the Ministry of National Education of the Republic of Türkiye, who is on a visit to the Republic of Azerbaijan.    It was noted that the meeting was also attended by directors and senior officials of the education departments of Ankara, Istanbul, Izmir, and Bursa.   During the meeting, the current cooperation and future development prospects in the field of vocational education between the two countries were discussed.
