Assessments and studies
PISA
The Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) has been implemented by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) since 2000. The study is conducted every three years (every four years starting in 2025) and measures the ability of 15-year-old students to apply the knowledge they have acquired in school in reading, mathematics and science to real life.
Azerbaijan participated in this international study for the first time in 2006, and then in 2009, 2018, 2022 and 2025. Since 2018, our country has been conducting the PISA study in a computer-based format.
TIMSS
The International Study of Trends in Mathematics and Science Education has been conducted by the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA) since 1995. The study is conducted every four years and assesses the knowledge of 4th and 8th grade students in mathematics and science.
Azerbaijan participated in the TIMSS study for the first time in 2011, and then again in 2019 and 2023. Since 2023, our country has switched to a computer-based assessment format in TIMSS. The next research period will take place in 2027.
PIRLS
The Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS) assesses the reading skills of fourth-grade students when working with literary and informational texts, and also allows the results to be compared with those of other countries. The study is conducted by the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA).
Azerbaijan participated in the PIRLS study for the first time in 2011, and then again in 2016 and 2021. Starting in 2026, Azerbaijan will participate in this assessment in a computer-based format. Also, starting in 2026, students will work on ePIRLS – innovative tasks that measure reading literacy in an online environment.
TALIS
The Teaching and Learning International Survey aims to examine the current state of affairs in the field of professional development for teachers and school leaders, their teaching practices, as well as management conditions and working environments. The survey is conducted by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA).
Azerbaijan joined the TALIS survey in 2024 and participated at the general secondary education level.
IELS
The International Early Learning and Child Well-being Study was developed by the OECD and assesses the early development of five-year-old children in both cognitive (early literacy, mathematical skills, self-regulation) and social-emotional (empathy, trust, etc.) aspects.
The study is conducted using a tablet with game-based tasks, and parents and teachers participate in surveys, providing information about the child's environment.
Azerbaijan participated in this study for the first time in the main phase in 2025.
ICILS
The International Computer and Information Literacy Study assesses students' skills in using digital technologies and their information literacy. Conducted by the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA), this study covers 8th grade students and is conducted every five years.
ICILS measures students' skills in conducting research, demonstrating creativity and communicating in a digital environment, as well as their computer and information literacy (CIL) and computational thinking (CT) skills.
Azerbaijan participated in this study for the first time in 2023.
PISA-BASED TEST FOR SCHOOLS
PISA-based Test for Schools is a study conducted by the OECD that gives schools the opportunity to compare their results with national and international indicators.
Azerbaijan has been participating in this program since the 2024/2025 academic year. The next research period is scheduled for the 2025/2026 academic year.
