The first day of the II ICESCO Ministerial Conference on PISA has ended

On May 13, the first day of the II ICESCO Ministerial Conference on PISA ended in Baku.   The international conference organized by the Ministry of Science and Education, Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO), in partnership with the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) is dedicated to the topic “Overview of PISA 2022 results: global and regional trends”.   Speaking at the opening ceremony, Minister of Science and Education Emin Amrullayev welcomed the guests and spoke about the importance of the conference. The minister said that this event gives us an opportunity to discuss the importance of PISA assessments for ICESCO member states.   Emin Amrullayev said that a unified evaluation is effective for the evaluation of education and policy making, and expressed his belief that the exchange of ideas held at the conference will contribute to the future educational life of societies.   Emin Amrullayev emphasized that one of the goals of the event is to ensure the mediation of Azerbaijan in the process of organizing an international study on the assessment of student achievements by Islamic countries. The minister said that our country has been participating in the international assessment of student achievements for years and that this is important for increasing the quality of education and competitiveness.   Speaking at the opening ceremony, ICESCO General Secretary Salim bin Mohammad Al-Malik said that this conference is of great importance as it builds on the success of the first conference held on November 9, 2022 at the headquarters of ICESCO. The General Secretary added that the current conference is proof of our commitment to improve the quality of education in the global environment.   Later, the Director of Education and Skills of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Andreas Schleicher, who joined the conference online, thanked Azerbaijan for organizing the conference.   Speaking about the results of the PISA study, Andreas Schleicher noted that keeping schools open for students longer, limiting digital distractors, strengthening partnerships with parents in the learning process of students, preventing stratification in education, adapting teacher development and teaching materials to needs, and improving the quality assurance of teaching in schools should be more on the agenda after the pandemic.   At the conference, OECD representative Michael Ward made a presentation on “Overview of PISA 2022 results: global and regional trends”.   On the first day of the conference, panel sessions were held on the topics “Student achievements: what students can do in mathematics, reading and natural sciences?”, “Support of the school environment to the learning process of students”, “Methodical tools for teachers and the effect of professional development training on student achievements”.   Within the sessions, interactive discussions were held on international results and ICESCO results of participating countries, PISA results for Azerbaijan, their impact on decision-making, future skills and other topics. During the discussions, active participation of our country in international evaluations was noted. In addition, it was stated that the development of student assessment frameworks among Islamic countries is planned, and Azerbaijan will support this process.   The conference will continue its work on May 14.

On May 13, the II ICESCO Ministerial Conference on PISA has started its work in Baku.   The international conference organized by the Ministry of Science and Education, Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO), in partnership with the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) is dedicated to the topic “Overview of PISA 2022 results: global and regional trends”.   More than 40 representatives from Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Egypt, United Arab Emirates, Kingdom of Bahrain, Latvia, Nigeria, Malaysia, Morocco, Brunei Darussalam, Lebanon, Sultanate of Oman, Gambia and other countries attended the conference.   The goal of the conference is to identify key points and best practices that can be used to adapt countries’ assessment frameworks to their unique educational landscapes, and to develop more effective, relevant assessment systems.   The conference is currently continuing its work.

The Minister of Science and Education visited Turkey

The Minister of Science and Education Emin Amrullayev visited Ankara, Republic of Turkey with the delegation led by Prime Minister Ali Asadov.   On May 8, Emin Amrullayev participated in the 11th meeting of the intergovernmental commission on economic cooperation between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Turkey, held in Ankara.   The leaders of the respective state institutions of both countries participated in the meeting co-chaired by the Prime Minister of Azerbaijan Ali Asadov and the Vice President of Turkey Cevdet Yilmaz.   Within the framework of the visit, the Minister of Science and Education met with the Minister of National Education of Turkey, Yusuf Tekin, the Chairman of the Higher Education Council, Erol Ozvar, and the Chairman of the National Education, Culture, Youth and Sports Commission of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, Mahmut Ozer.   At the meetings were discussed the ongoing and planned directions of cooperation between the two countries in the field of education.

Baku will host the II ICESCO Ministerial Conference on PISA

Baku will host the II ICESCO Ministerial Conference on PISA on 13-14 May.   The international conference dedicated to the topic "Overview of PISA 2022 results: global and regional trends" will be organized in partnership with the Ministry of Science and Education, the Institute of Education, the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).   Representatives from over 30 countries and more than 50 participants are expected to attend. The conference aims to identify key points and best practices that can be used to adapt countries' assessment frameworks to their unique educational landscapes and to develop more effective, relevant assessment systems. The conference format will include presentations and interactive discussions. During the conference, participants will explore areas of convergence and divergence between contexts and priorities of ICESCO member states, assessed skills and areas, assessment methodologies, and contextual data collection instruments of international assessments.   It is important to note that the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) is the largest international study of education, involving the OECD and its partner countries. PISA assesses the knowledge and skills of 15-year-old students in mathematics, reading, and science.

Minister of Science and Education meets with the Executive Director of Association of International Educators (NAFSA)

On May 3, the Minister of Science and Education Emin Amrullayev met with the Executive Director of the Association of International Educators (NAFSA) Fanta Aw.   The discussions revolved around prospects for cooperation between Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Science and Education and NAFSA.

Azerbaijani students win 1 silver and 2 bronze medals at the 41st Balkan Mathematics Olympiad

Our team successfully performed at the 41st Balkan Mathematical Olympiad, held in Varna, Bulgaria, from 27 April to 2 May. Our students won a total of 3 medals, including 1 silver, 2 bronze and 2 incentive awards.   Mirhabib Askerov, an 11th grade student of Baku Heydar Aliyev Modern Education Complex, won a silver medal at the Olympiad, Omer Gadimli and Ibrahim Kerimli, an 11th-grade students of Physics, Mathematics and Informatics biased lyceum, won bronze medals.   Besides, the motivational prize of the Olympiad was awarded to Telman Mammadov, an 11th-grade student of the Baku Turkish Lyceum of Dayanat Foundation and Rafiga Gambarova, a 9th-grade student of the Republican Lyceum with chemical and biology bias.   It should be noted that since 2007, Azerbaijani students participating in the Balkan Mathematics Olympiad have won a total of 1 gold, 18 silver and 38 bronze medals.

Minister of Science and Education meets with a representative of the Asian Development Bank

On May 2, the Minister of Science and Education, Emin Amrullayev, met with Sofia Shakil, Director of the Human Capital and Social Development Department of the ADB's Sector Group for Central and West Asia. The discussion revolved around the current state of relations between the Ministry of Science and Education and the Asian Development Bank in the field of education and prospects for cooperation.  

A meeting was held between the Ministry of Science and Education and “QS Quacquarelli Symonds” International Rating Agency

On May 1, a meeting was organized with Sergey Khristolyubov, regional director for Eastern Europe and Central Asia of the “QS Quacquarelli Symonds” International Rating Agency at the Ministry of Science and Education.   In the meeting led by the Minister of Science and Education Emin Amrullayev, the increasing the competitiveness of higher education institutions in Azerbaijan and development opportunities according to international indicators were discussed.   During the meeting, detailed discussions were held on strengthening the international recognition of our country’s educational programs, as well as cooperation opportunities.

The Deputy Minister of Science and Education visited Ankara

The delegation led by Deputy Minister of Science and Education Hasan Hasanli visited Ankara, Republic of Turkey.   On April 29, the delegation held a meeting with the head of the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA) Erkan Kayalar, Deputy Minister of National Education of the Republic of Turkey Celile Eren Ökten.   During the meetings, discussions were held on various directions of cooperation in the field of education between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Turkey.   On April 30, the delegation met with Erol Özvar, Chairman of the Higher Education Council of the Republic of Turkey. Necessary issues related to the organization of activities of Turkey-Azerbaijan University (TAU) were discussed at the meeting.
