Campaign starts to promote Islamic Solidarity Games among schoolchildren
Mass sporting events were launched on March 30 as a campaign starts to promote the 4th Islamic Solidarity Games among schoolchildren. Organized in accordance with an order of the minister of education of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the events are aimed at promoting the sports, which will be featured at the Islamic Solidarity Games, among schoolchildren, encouraging their interest in sport and healthy lifestyle. The tournaments will be held in six zones, featuring freestyle wrestling, Greco-Roman wrestling, judo, taekwondo, karate, boxing, athletics, table tennis, basketball, rhythmic gymnastics, and artistic gymnastics. More than 6,000 schoolchildren are expected to compete in mass sporting events. Winners of first, second and third places in both team and individual disciplines will be awarded certificates and medals. The tournaments will end on April 26.

Minister of education receives citizens in Aghdash
Minister of Education Mikayil Jabbarov received residents of Aghdash, Yevlakh, Barda districts and the city of Mingachevir at the Heydar Aliyev Center in the city of Aghdash on March 6. In accordance with March 2017 timetable of reception hours of government executives, internally displaced persons with temporary residence in Aghdash, Yevlakh, Barda districts and the city of Mingachevir also attended the reception. The minister listened to citizens`s requests, complaints and proposals, and instructed heads of the ministry’s appropriate bodies to immediately deal with every request in accordance with law. The issues raised at the reception included recruitment and transfer of teachers from one school (district) to another, student transfer, recognition of diplomas, etc. A number of issues were immediately dealt with. *** Minister Mikayil Jabbarov also viewed construction progress of a new education block of Qabala Vocational School. To be commissioned in the first half of this year, the vocational school will prepare highly-qualified specialists in the field of agriculture. The curriculum of the school will be made in accordance with BP`s “Development of New Occupations in Agricultural Vocational Education” project and “Agricultural Specialist” project of the United Nations Development Programme.

“Sustainable development of Karabakh by the example of Aghdam” project presented
SABAH groups students at Azerbaijan University of Architecture and Construction presented their “Sustainable development of Karabakh by the example of Aghdam” project on March 3. Participants in the event included deputy Prime Minister, chairman of the State Committee for Refugee and IDP Affairs Ali Hasanov, deputy chairperson of the Milli Majlis Bahar Muradova, Azerbaijan`s Commissioner for Human Rights Elmira Süleymanova, Minister of Education Mikayil Jabbarov, members of parliament and public figures. Participants of the ceremony first viewed an exhibition in the foyer of the university. In her remarks at the ceremony, rector of Azerbaijan University of Architecture and Construction Gulchohra Mammadova said the project aims to engage students in restoration work to be carried out in the occupied lands after they will be liberated. “This is a concept of design and sustainable development of Karabakh.” Project manager, head of the Department of Environment of Azerbaijan University of Architecture and Construction Faqan Aliyev said the project was developed by students at the university`s SABAH groups in partnership with teachers and professors. Students then presented a scheme to carry out renovation and construction works in the occupied lands by the example of the city of Aghdam. The scheme featured the general layout of the city, and layouts of the city`s transport infrastructure, proposals on the use of renewable energy sources and power-generation potential of Kichik Chay sources in Karabakh, plans for the city`s wastewater collection system and main pipeline plan, and layouts of private houses and multi-storey residential buildings. Deputy Prime Minister, chairman of the State Committee for Refugee and IDP Affairs Ali Hasanov welcomed the project of students at SABAH groups. He described “Sustainable development of Karabakh by the example of Aghdam” project as a true example of patriotism. “I am hopeful that by developing such projects our students will contribute to restoration and development of our occupied lands, which will be liberated under the leadership of the President of Azerbaijan.” “The head of state`s decision to launch restoration works in the liberated Jojuq Marjanli village is the beginning of a remarkable historical mission. And today`s event sets the outlines of the historical return.” Deputy chairperson of the Milli Majlis Bahar Muradova, Head of Shusha District Executive Authority Bayram Safarov congratulated the students on the presentation of the project. They said this initiative fully meets the goals set by the policy pursued by the President of Azerbaijan. Minister of Education Mikayil Jabbarov described the project as a product of long-term and tireless labour. “The project is not merely a professional approach. It indicates that our youth are not indifferent to crucial challenges facing our country. This project is the best example of patriotism and dedication.” Mikayil Jabbarov said the students presented a vital restoration project that will be so much needed by the country. The minister said the project is indicative of Azerbaijani students` potential. Mikayil Jabbarov said SABAH groups were established three years ago with the aim of creating innovative education environment, and preparing well-educated, skilled and well-prepared students and specialists. Rector of Azerbaijan University of Architecture and Construction thanked the participants of the event on behalf of the university`s professors and teachers.

Minister of Education receives Ukrainian delegation
Minister of Education Mikayil Jabbarov received a Ukrainian delegation led by First Deputy Minister of Education and Science Vladimir Kovtunets on February 28. They discussed Azerbaijan-Ukraine relations in the field of education and prospects for cooperation in accordance with the tasks set by the “State Strategy for Development of Education in the Republic of Azerbaijan”. They noted the importance of developing relations in the field of education.

Minister of Education continues Turkey visit
A delegation led by Minister of Education Mikayil Jabbarov visited the monument to the national leader in the Heydar Aliyev Park in Ankara on February 22. The Azerbaijani delegation also put a wreath at the tomb of the founder of the Republic of Turkey Mustafa Kemal Ataturk at Anitkabir. The minister of education signed the guest book here. Minister of Education Mikayil Jabbarov then visited Heydar Aliyev School in Ankara, and addressed pupils. Mikayil Jabbarov then met with Minster of National Education of the Republic of Turkey Ismet Yilmaz. They hailed friendly and brotherly relations between Azerbaijan and Turkey, and discussed prospects for cooperation in the field of education. Minister Mikayil Jabbarov then had a meeting with chairman of the Directorate of Turks Living Abroad and Related Communities Mehmet Kose. They discussed a range of issues, including the expansion of student exchange and application of different scholarship programs.

Minister of education visits Bilkent University, meets with Azerbaijani students
A delegation led by Minister of Education Mikayil Jabbarov visited Ihsan Dogramaci Bilkent University in Ankara on February 22. The delegation was informed of study opportunities, teaching technologies and financial and technical resources of Bilkent University, which is one of Turkey`s leading higher education institutions. Ihsan Dogramaci Bilkent University employs the largest number of foreign professors and teachers in Turkey. The university has made great strides in the fields of research and teaching. President of the Board of Trustees of Ihsan Dogramaci Bilkent University professor Ali Dogramaci, rector Abdullah Atalar and other members of the university`s management attended the meeting. The delegation then met with a group of Azerbaijani students studying under “2007-2015 State Program for Study of Azerbaijani Youth Abroad”. Minister of Education Mikayil Jabbarov addressed the students. The minister highlighted educational reforms and measures to improve the quality of education in Azerbaijan. Mikayil Jabbarov said national leader Heydar Aliyev had always paid great attention to the development of education. “President Ilham Aliyev successfully continues this policy, which ensured the country`s making great strides in recent years. Ensuring that Azerbaijani youth study at leading foreign universities through government funding is a historical accomplishment for our people.” Minister of Education Mikayil Jabbarov then responded to questions from students.

Minister of education holds meetings at Grand National Assembly of Turkey and Higher Education Council in Ankara
Minister of Education Mikayil Jabbarov had a meeting with deputy chair of the Commission on Education, Culture, Youth and Sport of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey Burhanettin Uysal on February 22. They discussed the development of cooperation between Azerbaijan and Turkey in the field of education based on friendly and brotherly relations of the two countries. They also exchanged views over the prospects for closer cooperation between Azerbaijan and Turkey in all areas. Following the meeting Mikayil Jabbarov viewed the part of the parliament that was damaged during an attempted coup d`etat in Turkey on 15 July 2016. Minister of Education Mikayil Jabbarov then met with chairman of the Higher Education Council of the Republic of Turkey Yekta Sarac. They discussed future areas of Azerbaijan-Turkey cooperation in the field of higher education.

Minister of Education Mikayil Jabbarov addresses international conference on 25th anniversary of Khojaly genocide in Ankara
The international conference “Khojaly Genocide, Crimes Against Humanity and Terrorism” kicked off in the Turkish capital of Ankara on February 22. The conference is co-organized by the Turkic Council and Hoca Ahmet Yesevi International Turkish-Kazakh University. Speakers at the opening ceremony included deputy chairman of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey Ahmet Aydın, Foreign Minister of the Republic of Azerbaijan Elmar Mammadyarov, Foreign Minister of the Republic of Turkey Mevlut Cavusoglu, Minister of Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan Mikayil Jabbarov, Secretary General of the Turkic Council Ramil Hasanov, and chairman of the Board of Trustees of Hoca Ahmet Yesevi International Turkish-Kazakh University Musa Yıldız. In his address, Minister Mikayil Jabbarov drew the audience`s attention to the massacre committed by Armenians in Khojaly, and consequences of the crimes and aggression against Azerbaijan. He said Khojaly genocide was a clear evidence of the policy of intervention, occupation and ethnic cleansing against the people of Azerbaijan. Minister Mikayil Jabbarov underlined the role of education in promoting the international community`s awareness of the truth about Khojaly genocide, restoring the historical justice and exposing the criminals. The minister also paid tribute to those who were martyred in Khojaly and gave their lives for Azerbaijan`s independence.

Qatar’s Education and Higher Education Minister visits Azerbaijan
On February 20 Minister of Education and Higher Education of the State of Qatar Mohammed bin Abdul Wahed Al-Hammadi, who is on a visit in Azerbaijan, visited the Alley of Honors to lay a wreath at the tomb of national leader Heydar Aliyev. He also put flowers at the grave of prominent ophthalmologist, academician Zarifa Aliyeva. The Qatari minister then visited the Alley of Martyrs to pay tribute to the heroic sons of Azerbaijan, who sacrificed their lives for independence and territorial integrity of the country. He laid a wreath at Eternal Flame memorial. Later the same day Minister of Education and Higher Education of the State of Qatar Mohammed bin Abdul Wahed Al-Hammadi met with Minister of Education Mikayil Jabbarov. They highlighted the results of Mikayil Jabbarov`s visit to the State of Qatar last May, and discussed prospects for future cooperation between the two countries in the field of education. The Minister of Education and Higher Education of the State of Qatar then visited Baku State University, where he met with rector, professors, teachers, as well as students studying Arabic philology at the Faculty of Oriental Studies. The Qatari minister then visited ADA University. The delegation was informed of the activity of ADA University, and discussed cooperation prospects. The two-day trip will see the delegation of Qatar visit several higher education institutions.

Winners of “Scientists of Tomorrow” 6th nationwide contest awarded
A ceremony was held on February 17 to award winners of “Scientists of Tomorrow” 6th nationwide contest. In his remarks at the ceremony, deputy Minister of Education Jeyhun Bayramov said “Scientists of Tomorrow” contest aims to develop scientific potential of the youth. He said this year contest featured more innovative and creative projects. The deputy minister stressed the importance of forging cooperation between research and educational institutions for improving pupils` scientific creativity and encouraging their research activity. Decided by the jury, winners were announced in eight nominations. Then authors of the three projects that will be presented at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF) due to take place in the USA this May were announced. Pupil of Baku city ecological lyceum No 291 Elshan Naghizade and pupil of Baku city school lyceum No 299 Elgun Alishev will present a project in computer science category. Pupils of Baku European Lyceum Teymur Kalkayev and Hamid Salimov will submit a project in engineering nomination. Pupil of Istek lyceum Qudrat Muradli was named the author of the best project. The winners received certificates, medals and prize money. The contest was organized by the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Youth and Sport, Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, Heydar Aliyev Center, Knowledge Fund under the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Republican Committee of the Free Trade Unions of Azerbaijan Education Workers and Intel. “Scientists of Tomorrow” contest covers mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, medicine and healthcare, ecology, engineering and computer science. Launched in 2012, the contest has involved 730 pupils so far, with 30 qualifying for Intel ISEF.
