As schools around the world respond to healthcare challenges, the need for remote learning tools has never been more urgent. To make the transition to distance learning more straightforward, the Government of Azerbaijan decided to close all educational institutions on March 3rd. They evaluated several different solutions for remote learning to keep education ongoing. As the best solution available, the Ministry of Education advised all higher education institutions to use Teams for remote learning and provided additional support. To make the transition to distance learning more accessible, Microsoft team in Azerbaijan, together with Bestcomp Group, Edumedia, and Innovative Technologies in Education, helped schools, educators, students, and their families as they navigate this new way of learning. According to the Ministry, Microsoft Teams for Education, in comparison with competitive solutions, provides a holistic environment that allows content distribution, collaboration, live meetings, and assessments. “Microsoft Teams is scalable to the needs of the educational system, and Microsoft’s local office and partner network support were available immediately,” – said Vusal Khanlarov, Head of ICT Bureau in the Ministry of Education. Continuing to drive student engagement and focused learning can be a challenge, especially for those moving to remote learning for the first time. Educators need support to help make this work. For K12 schools, Ministry in Azerbaijan launched Virtual School based on Teams, where students and educators can register and access educational content, assessments, and online classes immediately. They can find all e-books, video-lessons, additional education applications, and centralized testing. All such resources were integrated to bring together face-to-face connections, assignments, and conversations in a single hub. Today, more than a million K12 students and 100.000 teachers have already been registered and actively using the platform. This project has been widely covered by local online and TV media to support educators who have created thousands of videos with the help of Teams for Education. Now, it is possible to evaluate the level of knowledge by using PowerBI tracking activities by each region and every school in Azerbaijan. At the same time, Virtual School became the largest online platform for cooperation and collaboration countrywide. It is an excellent example of how one Ministry found the right strategy, resources, and technology to quickly create online classrooms that help students, teachers, and faculty find new ways to connect and learn. Even more, 100.000+ users from 30 out of 50 universities and all vocational education institutions use Teams and decided to continue with Microsoft Teams as a learning platform. Ministry of Education continues running the Virtual School project as an always-on platform, helping students stay engaged, and learning stays on track. At the same time, the Ministry uses Microsoft Teams for internal daily meetings. On July 8 2020, French-Azerbaijani University (UFAZ) under Azerbaijan State Oil and Industry University (ASOIU) organized its first-ever Graduation Ceremony online. The first UFAZ students, admitted in the 2016/2017 academic year, are graduating this year. The ceremony, organized online via the Microsoft Teams platform, was simultaneously streamed live on Facebook. Amongst others, the Minister of Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan Jeyhun Bayramov, French Ambassador to Azerbaijan Zakari Gross, Azerbaijani Ambassador to France Rahman Mustafayev, Vice-Chairperson for International Relations of University of Strasbourg Irini Tsamadou Jacoberger, ASOIU Rector, Professor Mustafa Babanli, UFAZ Executive Director Vazeh Askerov, Secretary General Charlotte Payen, local and foreign faculty, alumni, students and staff participated at the event. The team representing our country at the International Youth Innovations Competition (BIEA 2020) held in the United Kingdom has succeeded. The team of Azerbaijan was among 12 teams taking part in the finals. Students of the Lyceum named after the academician Zarifa Aliyeva under the Ministry of Education Ruslan Bayramov, Elvin Bilalov and Suleyman Ismayilov were selected as the best in the "Best Effort Award" nomination. This year's theme of the competition held in London from 2019 is called "Let's protect the coasts." The device developed by our students to clean water and land from plastic wastes was highly appreciated by foreign experts. The winners of the Republican subject Olympiads have been determined. According to the results of the Olympiads, totally 320 winners were announced, including winners of 55 gold, 105 silver and 160 bronze medals. The winners cover 158 general education institutions from 42 cities and regions of the country. 101 students out of them are girls and 219 students are boys. The 10 gold medalists who showed the highest results in each subject at the Republican subject Olympiads were awarded the nomination "First of the first". It is worthy to note that about 34,000 students participated in the Olympiad in the 2019-2020 academic year. The purpose of the Olympiads is to identify talented children, increase students' interest in subjects, and allow them to demonstrate their knowledge and skills in a healthy competitive environment. Azerbaijani schoolchildren have achieved yet another success at recent online international Olympiads in mathematics and physics. Thus, at the Asian-Pacific Mathematics Olympiad (APMO), which was attended by 337 students from 38 countries, Abbas Mammadov, a student of the Republican Lyceum on Physics, Mathematics and Informatics under the Ministry of Education, won a silver medal, Murad Aghazade, a student of the same lyceum, and Vugar Guliyev, a student of secondary school No. 1 in Malibayli village of Shusha won bronze medals. Ayhan Suleymanzade, a student of the Baku Turkish Lyceum, won a silver medal at the online physics Olympiad organized by Russia, which was attended by over 450 students, and Tamerlan Agayev, a student of the Republican Lyceum on Physics, Mathematics and Informatics, won a silver medal. Students of Sumgayit city Natural Sciences oriented gymnasium Murad Bashirov and Siraj Yakhyazade won bronze medals.

On June 8, the spring examination session for students studying at higher and secondary special education institutions has started. The exams were organized online in connection with the COVID-19 pandemic. Students who incur academic debt during the current exam session will be eligible to retake the exam once in each subject. The students will also be able to take a re-examination in a maximum of two subjects (once per subject) on which academic debt has been incurred in previous semesters. No payment is required for the re-examination. Students who do not feel ready for the spring exam session may refuse to attend. Free summary lectures will be organized for these students in August-September (for this, students will have to apply to the educational institution where they are study). The student can apply to the educational institution where he/she is studying and participate in the 4-week counseling hours. Guidance on the key topics will be provided during the consultation hours. From the end of August to September 15, these students will have a chance to take the exam again. In addition, more than 40,000 students enrolled in the graduation year were exempted from the state exam (based on previous academic indicators). It should be noted that the Ministry of Education will directly monitor this spring exam session is conducted fairly, and all complaints will be considered and resolved operatively, taking into account the difficulties appeared to all due to the existing conditions. The 1,000,000th user of the "Virtual School" launched by the Ministry of Education has been successfully registered. This user is Hikmet Guluzadeh, a 2nd-grade student at Kalbajar district secondary school No. 56. Today, the Virtual School project covers 935,000 students and 89,000 teachers across the country. To date, 1.5 million lessons have been taught through the portal, 1.3 million lesson materials have been distributed in virtual classrooms, and more than 100,000 assignments have been given to students. It should be noted that the aim of the "Virtual School" portal, launched on April 2 with organizational support from the Ministry of Education, is to ensure the interactivity of TV lessons broadcast throughout the country and to provide distance learning opportunities. Everyday video and audio lessons are held on the portal the opportunities of which are expanded, TV lessons are watched, e-learning resources of the Ministry of Education are used, pedagogical councils with school administration and teachers are held in special groups, meetings with parents are held, weekly assignments are performed by students, online seminars and courses are organized for teachers, students and parents. Every weekend, live meetings are held on the portal, where successful samples of lessons conducted by teachers are presented and additional teaching opportunities of the portal are discussed. Regular meetings are also held with school principals and their deputies where the organization of the project's teaching process, education management and opportunities for the professional development of educators are discussed. To date, the Ministry of Education has conducted online training for about 16,000 teachers to ensure the effective use of the portal. At present, online courses on robot technologies, programming and engineering have been launched for students. This is already for the seventh successive week, in order to increase healthy competition among students and test the knowledge learned, a "Virtual Excellence" knowledge contest is held. The first 10 students who answered correctly the test tasks presented on the portal earlier than others are announced as the winners of the week.
