The Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) 2018 was held in Pittsburgh, US, on May 13-18. The fair featured more than 1,800 students from 75 countries.  Azerbaijan was represented by winners of “Scientists of Tomorrow” countrywide competition – students of Zarifa Aliyeva Lyceum Aliagha Abdullayev and Adnan Bunyatov in Physics and Astronomy category, Javid Huseynzade and Jeyla Huseynzade in Systems Software category, Fidan Ibrahimova in Cellular and Molecular Biology category, student of Baku city secondary school No. 238 Mahammad Hajiyev in Environmental Engineering category. Two projects by the Azerbaijani students won special awards of the fair. TreLop project by Javid Huseynzade and Jeyla Huseynzade won a $5,000 award of Oracle Academy for outstanding project in the Systems Software category. “The Role of Electromagnetic Field in Changing Physical-Chemical Properties of Oil” project by Aliagha Abdullayev and Adnan Bunyatov won UN Sustainable Development Goal Award of $1,000 provided by the Junior Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, which is a second Category Center of UNESCO. The Intel International Science and Engineering Fair unites the top young scientific minds, showcasing their talents on an international stage, where doctoral-level scientists review and judge their work. Each year, approximately 1,800 high school students from more than 75 countries, regions, and territories are awarded the opportunity to showcase their independent research and compete for on average $5 million in prizes at Intel ISEF. The competition focuses on identifying, inspiring, and engaging the world's next STEM generation. Millions of students in grades 9-12 or equivalent worldwide compete each year in local and school-sponsored science fairs. The winners of these events go on to participate in 420 Society-affiliated regional and state fairs, from which the best win the opportunity to attend Intel ISEF. Each affiliated fair may send a pre-determined number of projects to Intel ISEF (as factored by participation and high school population) to compete in 22 different categories. Azerbaijan selects its participants through “Scientists of Tomorrow” countrywide competition. This year`s competition saw 528 students at secondary education institutions submit a total of 336 projects, including 41 team and 109 individual projects. The competition featured 8 categories. 40 percent of the participants were students from regional schools. The jury panel chose 46 projects submitted by 79 students. 12 students (7 projects) ranked first, 28 students (15 projects) ranked second, while 39 students (24 projects) finished third. This year`s countrywide competition differed from the previous editions as its jury panel included a French specialist.

President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev has attended the opening of the 480-seat secondary school No 6 in Garakhanbayli administrative district in the city of Nakhchivan. The head of state cut the ribbon symbolizing the opening of the school and then viewed conditions created here. The three-storey school has two computer rooms, three classrooms supplied with the electronic boards, physics, chemistry and biology laboratories, 2 chess classes, military room, 24 general classrooms, teachers' rooms and gym. The school is supplied with all necessary equipment. President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev has attended the opening of a new building of Nakhchivan Teachers Institute. The head of state cut the ribbon symbolizing the opening of the building. Chairman of the Supreme Assembly of Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic Vasif Talibov informed President Ilham Aliyev that the six-storey building has 23 auditoriums. The building features 4 computer rooms, 16 rooms supplied with the electronic boards, library, reading as well as the electronic reading rooms, painting and sculpture workshops. Fine arts, geography, music, military, medical, Azerbaijani language, higher mathematics and computer rooms are supplied with all the necessary equipment. State-of-the-art facilities were installed in the gym. There are a 132-seat and 20-seat two conference halls in the building. On May 14, Minister of Education Jeyhun Bayramov met with schoolchildren who shined at the FIDE World School Chess Championship held in the Albanian city of Durres. The minister congratulated winner of the world championship Murad Ibrahimli, silver medalists Aytaj Heydarova and Yusif Karimli and bronze medalist Ismayil Suleymanli, expressing hope that they will make greater achievements in the future. The schoolchildren were presented with certificates of appreciation and valuable gifts by the Ministry of Education. The minister posed for photographs together with the schoolchildren.

A ceremony was held at Heydar Aliyev Center on May 4 to award the winners of “Best presentation” contest, which marked the 95th birthday anniversary of national leader Heydar Aliyev. Prior to the ceremony, senior education officials visited the Alley of Honors to pay tribute to national leader Heydar Aliyev and lay flowers at his grave. They also put flowers at the grave of prominent ophthalmologist, academician Zarifa Aliyeva. Participants in the award ceremony included Deputy Prime Minister, deputy chair and executive secretary of the New Azerbaijan Party Ali Ahmadov, Executive Director of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation Anar Alakbarov, Minister of Transport, Communications and High Technologies Ramin Guluzade, Chairman of Azerbaijan Education Workers Free Trade Unions Republican Committee Sattar Mehbaliyev, parliamentarians, heads of educational institutions, education experts, teachers and students. According to results of “Best presentation” contest, eight entries received 1st degree certificates, 14 entries received 2nd degree certificates, 18 entries received 3rd degree certificates and 25 entries received certificates of merit. The winners also received valuable prizes. Held among 9th-11th grade pupils of general education institutions, the contest was co-organized by the Ministry of Education, Heydar Aliyev Foundation, New Azerbaijan Party, Ministry of Transport, Communications and High Technologies, and Azerbaijan Education Workers Free Trade Unions Republican Committee.

  A meeting has been held with representatives of British Council at the Ministry of Education. Speaking at the meeting, British Council Azerbaijan Director Elizabeth White highlighted successful results of the joint projects aimed at developing vocational education. She hailed relations between British Council and the Ministry of Education, and outlined future cooperation prospects. The event provided an insight into “Access to Hospitality and Apprenticeship Scheme” programme implemented by British Council Azerbaijan in partnership with the Ministry of Education and tourism industry, and BP-funded “Development of New Occupations in Agricultural Vocational Education” project.  As 60 graduates of the vocational education sector were already provided with employment, it is planned to engage another 180 people in the project. Director of the State Vocational Education Agency Famil Mustafayev praised cooperation between the agency and British Council under different educational and teaching projects, and expressed his confidence that this collaboration would continue developing. The meeting also featured the exchange of views over future cooperation prospects and other issues of mutual interest.
