The Azerbaijan State Pedagogical University celebrates its 100th anniversary

The 100th anniversary ceremony of the Azerbaijan State Pedagogical University (ASPU) was held on 17 December.   The anniversary ceremony was attended by Farah Aliyeva, Head of the Humanitarian Policy, Diaspora, Multiculturalism and Religious Affairs Department of the Presidential Administration, Deputy Prime Minister Ali Ahmedov, Education Minister Emin Amrullayev, Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov, members of the National Assembly, state and government officials, and representatives of the scientific community.   The National Anthem was played at the beginning of the event and participants observed a minute's silence in memory of martyrs.   In his opening speech, Jafar Jafarov, rector of the Azerbaijan State Pedagogical University, spoke about the work done at the institution of higher education in recent years, the reforms undertaken and the results achieved. The rector noted that the main objectives are to improve the quality of education by updating the content, ensuring maximum transparency in the learning and examination process, preparation of educational programs for a new generation, increasing the effectiveness of scientific research, expansion of international relations and improvement of infrastructure.   Speaking at the event, Education Minister Emin Amrullayev stressed that the university plays an important role in the country's education sector. The Minister spoke about the successes of the educational institution, as well as the importance of the successful ongoing dual degree program between the ASPU and George Washington University as part of the "State Program for Improving the International Competitiveness of the Higher Education System in the Republic of Azerbaijan for 2019-2023". He also noted the high level of student enrolment at the ASPU, as well as the high results achieved by university graduates in the examinations for recruitment as teachers.   Other guests who addressed the event then spoke about the role of the ASPU in education sector, congratulated the teaching staff and wished everyone success.   A film dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the ASPU was also screened at the anniversary ceremony.

International Olympiad in the name of Lutfi Zadeh to be held

On 20-25 December 2021, the International Olympiad in the name of Lutfi Zadeh, a world-famous Azerbaijani scientist and founder of fuzzy logic theory, will take place.   As part of the plan of events to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Lutfi Zadeh, an Olympiad on mathematics and computer science will be organized among schoolchildren. Students from all over the world will participate in the Olympiad. The Olympiad, which is planned to be held online, will be open to students under 18 years of age.   It is scheduled to open the Olympiad in an online format on December 20. There will be a competition day in mathematics on 22 December and in a computer science on 23 December. An announcement of the winners and a closing ceremony will take place on 25 December.   In mathematics, participants will be given 4 tasks and 4 hours and 30 minutes to solve them, and in computer science, participants will be given 4 tasks and 5 hours to solve them.   It should be noted that the main purpose of the Olympiad is to raise awareness of the outstanding scientist Lutfi Zadeh and his contribution to science among schoolchildren worldwide, to ensure friendship among talented young people from different countries, and to create an interest in in-depth study of mathematics and informatics among schoolchildren.

The Deputy Education Minister meets with the Islamic Development Bank Group

On 15 December, Deputy Education Minister Mukhtar Mammadov met with a delegation led by Dr. Farid Khan, Country Coordinating Manager of the Islamic Development Bank Group. During the meeting, prospects for cooperation between the Ministry of Education and the Islamic Development Bank in the field of education were discussed.  

Education Minister is elected as a president of Azerbaijan Basketball Federation

On 14 December, the Azerbaijan Basketball Federation held a report-election conference.    Speaking at the event, Youth and Sports Minister Farid Gaibov welcomed the participants to the conference and wished them every success.    Nadir Nasibov, president of the Azerbaijan Basketball Federation, then briefed on the Federation's activities in recent years.   New elections were then held for the Federation's leadership. Emin Amrullayev, Minister of Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan, was elected as the new president of the Azerbaijan Basketball Federation. The conference also elected Simuzar Feyzullayeva, Vilayat Valiyev, Bakhtiyar Aslanbeyli and Elnur Aliyev as members of the Presidium of the Azerbaijan Basketball Federation. At the conclusion of the event, Chingiz Huseynzadeh, vice-president of the National Olympic Committee, wished success to the Federation's new leadership.   

STEAM Azerbaijan festival opening ceremony takes place

The opening ceremony of "Steam Azerbaijan Festival 2021" was held on 9 December at Baku Expo Centre with the support of the Ministry of Education as part of the STEAM Azerbaijan project.   The ceremony was attended by Education Minister Emin Amrullayev, members of the National Assembly, community representatives and guests from Turkey and Israel. Organized for the first time for students in grades 6-11, the festival aims to identify talented and creative students with a diversity of ideas and to develop new opportunities for cooperation and communication between students. Speaking at the opening ceremony of the festival, Education Minister Emin Amrullayev said that STEAM is a project combining digital skills, competencies of the 21st century. The Minister noted that more than 1,000 students from different regions of Azerbaijan took part in the festival with over 350 projects. Stressing that STEAM project is implemented in our country due to the support of First Vice-President Mehriban Aliyeva, the Minister said that this project covers more than 100,000 students. After outlining the STEAM approach to education, the Minister wished the festival success. Head of STEAM Azerbaijan project Igrar Nazarov said that STEAM project has been implemented since 2019-2020 school year, and noted that currently the project covers 302 schools, 1600 teachers. The project is carried out for 2 hours a week, 68 hours a year in VI, VII, VIII classes. Out of the schools, where the project is being implemented, 189 schools are located in Baku, while 113 schools are located in regions. Igar Nazarov spoke about content development under the project, preparation of new innovative textbooks, integration of STEAM education into the next levels of education, as well as cooperation with various foreign companies. The project manager noted that the STEAM project regularly organizes competitions and contests to identify talented students. In his speech at the festival, Israeli start-up and acceleration expert Tal Katran touched on the importance of the festival and noted that this festival gives students the opportunity to gain knowledge and skills and work as a team. At the end of his speech, the guest wished the participants success. After the speeches, the competitions in the various categories that were foreseen within the festival kicked off. It was noted that competitions will be held in the categories of “STEAM Open (Makerthon)”, “Hackathon”, “Micro:bit”, “Lego Sumo senior”, Lego Sumo junior”, “Line follower”, “3D Cad”, “Short movie”, “Edu dron”, and “Humanoid robot”. In addition, participants will be introduced to the "Escape Room" module for the Quest technology and will be able to become active participants in the game. On the second day of the festival, on 10 December, there will be an awards ceremony for the winning teams of the incentive competitions. It should be noted that the main aim of the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art & Math) project, which was initiated by the Ministry of Education, is to develop creative thinking and collaborative skills in students, create opportunities for learning through the creative process, not to teach subjects in isolation but to combine them into a unified learning model based on real applications, enhance students' ability to use modern IT equipment by introducing different programming languages.  

New school was constructed by Heydar Aliyev Foundation in Birinji Nugadi village, Guba

President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva and their daughter Leyla Aliyeva have viewed conditions created at secondary school No1 constructed by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation in Birinji Nugadi village, Guba district.   They were informed of the work done at the school.   The head of state, the First Lady and their daughter toured the classrooms and studies of the new school.   https://president.az/

A new renewable energy programme for Azerbaijan’s university

The Ministry of Education of Azerbaijan and bp today signed a Protocol of Intent on cooperation to found a new renewable energy  programme in  one of the local universitities.   The protocol marks the start of joint work on an important educational project that aims to train national professionals specialising in renewable energy related disciplines including the use of renewable energy technologies. This will be achieved by establishing a new master’s degree programme in a local higher educational institution through partnership with a UK university. As part of the protocol a working group will be set up to define the technical aspects  of the project including the selection of an implementing partner.  Emin Amrullayev, Minister of Education of Azerbaijan, said: “The strategy of turning "black gold" into human capital created important opportunities to support the education of young people abroad. About 3,500 young people studied abroad within the "State Program for the Education of Azerbaijani Youth Abroad in 2007-2015" approved by the decree of President Ilham Aliyev. It is very important to train specialists in renewable energy and we are pleased to start cooperation with bp in this area. We also plan to implement research projects within this programme.”  Gary Jones, bp’s regional president for Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey, said: “We are very pleased to extend our long   and successful collaboration with the Ministry of Education to a new area in support of Azerbaijan’s energy transition efforts.  The new university programme we will establish is designed to build a new field of expertise and capacity that the country will need to develop its renewable energy sector. This is a great project that supports Azerbaijan’s steps to the future of energy and our own purpose to reimagine energy for people and our planet.”     The project will be jointly funded by the Ministry of Education and bp.  bp’s contribution to the project is $2 million.    Some  40 renewable energy professionals are expected to be trained a year through the new master’s degree programme.   

A delegation from the Council of Higher Education of Turkey visits Shusha

A delegation from the Council of Higher Education of Turkey visited the city of Shusha. The delegation led by the Minister of Education Emin Amrullayev included Nobel laureate Aziz Sanjar, chairman of the Council of Higher Education of Turkey  Erol Ozvar, Turkish Ambassador to the Republic of Azerbaijan Cahit Bagci, Rector of UNEC Adalat Muradov and foreign researchers who came to our country within the UNEC Economic Forum.   As part of the visit, the guests visited historical sites in Shusha and saw many cultural monuments. They visited the Fortress Walls, Yukhari Govhar Agha Mosque and Byulbyul House Museum.   The participants of the trip toured the Jidir Plain (Azerbaijani: Cidir duzu) and familiarized themselves with the restoration and reconstruction work carried out in Shusha.

Briefing on the establishment of a joint Azerbaijani-Turkish university

On December 3, Education Minister Emin Amrullayev and Erol Ozvar, Chairman of the Council of Higher Education of Turkey, held a briefing.   The briefing clarified issues related to the establishment of a joint Azerbaijani-Turkish university. It was noted that discussions have already started in connection with the establishment of the university. The university will teach specialties, which are in the leading universities of Turkey and are in demand in Azerbaijan.   The briefing concluded with answers to questions from the representatives of the media.

Deputy Education Minister meets founder of Istanbul Aydin University

On 3 December, Deputy Education Minister Firudin Gurbanov met with Mustafa Aydin, head of Istanbul Aydin University and the Eurasian Union of the Universities.    The meeting included an exchange of views on mutual cooperation with Istanbul Aydin University.   The meeting discussed the participation of local higher education institutions in the 7th Eurasian Higher Education Summit (EUVIE 2022), which will take place on 2-4 March 2022 in a virtual format in Istanbul, Turkey.   At the same time, the meeting discussed the mission and activities of the Eurasian Universities Union (EURAS), the promotion of cooperation between more than 110 universities from Western and Central Europe, the Balkans, the Caucasus, the Middle East and Asia, and its importance for the global development of educational standards in the Eurasian region.   The meeting focused on the exchange of students and professors from Aydin University in Istanbul with a number of higher education institutions in Azerbaijan, the organisation of joint events, the prospects for the development of a dual degree programme and cooperation in the field of scientific research.   It should be noted that Istanbul Aydin University, founded in 2003, is a private university. The university has 6,500 international students from 107 countries and has links and student exchange programs with more than 450 prestigious institutions around the world.
