The first day of the II ICESCO Ministerial Conference on PISA has ended
On May 13, the first day of the II ICESCO Ministerial Conference on PISA ended in Baku.
The international conference organized by the Ministry of Science and Education, Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO), in partnership with the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) is dedicated to the topic “Overview of PISA 2022 results: global and regional trends”.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Minister of Science and Education Emin Amrullayev welcomed the guests and spoke about the importance of the conference. The minister said that this event gives us an opportunity to discuss the importance of PISA assessments for ICESCO member states.
Emin Amrullayev said that a unified evaluation is effective for the evaluation of education and policy making, and expressed his belief that the exchange of ideas held at the conference will contribute to the future educational life of societies.
Emin Amrullayev emphasized that one of the goals of the event is to ensure the mediation of Azerbaijan in the process of organizing an international study on the assessment of student achievements by Islamic countries. The minister said that our country has been participating in the international assessment of student achievements for years and that this is important for increasing the quality of education and competitiveness.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, ICESCO General Secretary Salim bin Mohammad Al-Malik said that this conference is of great importance as it builds on the success of the first conference held on November 9, 2022 at the headquarters of ICESCO. The General Secretary added that the current conference is proof of our commitment to improve the quality of education in the global environment.
Later, the Director of Education and Skills of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Andreas Schleicher, who joined the conference online, thanked Azerbaijan for organizing the conference.
Speaking about the results of the PISA study, Andreas Schleicher noted that keeping schools open for students longer, limiting digital distractors, strengthening partnerships with parents in the learning process of students, preventing stratification in education, adapting teacher development and teaching materials to needs, and improving the quality assurance of teaching in schools should be more on the agenda after the pandemic.
At the conference, OECD representative Michael Ward made a presentation on “Overview of PISA 2022 results: global and regional trends”.
On the first day of the conference, panel sessions were held on the topics “Student achievements: what students can do in mathematics, reading and natural sciences?”, “Support of the school environment to the learning process of students”, “Methodical tools for teachers and the effect of professional development training on student achievements”.
Within the sessions, interactive discussions were held on international results and ICESCO results of participating countries, PISA results for Azerbaijan, their impact on decision-making, future skills and other topics. During the discussions, active participation of our country in international evaluations was noted. In addition, it was stated that the development of student assessment frameworks among Islamic countries is planned, and Azerbaijan will support this process.
The conference will continue its work on May 14.
