On May 13, the II ICESCO Ministerial Conference on PISA is being held in Baku.
The international conference organized by the Ministry of Science and Education, Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO), in partnership with the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) is dedicated to the topic “Overview of PISA 2022 results: global and regional trends”.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Minister of Science and Education Emin Amrullayev welcomed the guests and spoke about the importance of the conference. The minister said that this event gives us an opportunity to discuss the importance of PISA assessments for ICESCO member states.
Emin Amrullayev said that a unified evaluation is effective for the evaluation of education and policy making, and expressed his belief that the exchange of ideas held at the conference will contribute to the future educational life of societies.
Emin Amrullayev emphasized that one of the goals of the event is to ensure the mediation of Azerbaijan in the process of organizing an international study on the assessment of student achievements by Islamic countries. The Minister said that our country has been participating in the international assessment of student achievements for years and that this is important for increasing the quality of education and competitiveness.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, ICESCO General Secretary Salim bin Mohammad Al-Malik said that this conference is of great importance as it builds on the success of the first conference held on November 9, 2022 at the headquarters of ICESCO. The General Secretary added that the current conference is proof of our commitment to improve the quality of education in the global environment.
Later, the Director of Education and Skills of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Andreas Schleicher, who joined the conference online, thanked Azerbaijan for organizing the conference.
Speaking about the results of the PISA study, Andreas Schleicher noted that keeping schools open for students longer, limiting digital distractors, strengthening partnerships with parents in the learning process of students, preventing stratification in education, adapting teacher development and teaching materials to needs, and improving the quality assurance of teaching in schools should be more on the agenda after the pandemic.
