The magazine “Azerbaijan mektebi”

The magazine “Azerbaijan mektebi” (Azerbaijani School), which celebrated its 85th anniversary in 2009, is considered to be a long-lasting magazine in the pedagogical press history of the country. The magazine first was established in 1924 and named “Yeni mekteb” (“New school”). In 1930, it was renamed and entitled as a “Muellime komek” (Assistance for teacher). Since 1943, the magazine has started to publish under the name of “Azerbaijan mektebi” (Azerbaijani school). During this period, the magazine has played a leading role in renovating the education system, increasing the quality of education, promoting of contemporary methods, nurturing of young generation in the spirit of Azerbaijanizm and national traditions, as well as in disseminatingthe best practices. The magazine publishes articles outlining experiences of new type schools, higher and secondary special schools, and creative teachers. Moreover, the magazine publishes materials reflecting the experiences of developed countries in the education field, as well as the international cooperation.
In the first half of the 20th century the pedagogical issues, educational methods have gained a strict attention. During this period, academicians Mammad Arif, Feyzulla Gasimzadeh, Hamid Arasli, Mammad Jafar, Ashraf Huseynov, Mammadaga Shiraliyev, correspondent members on language Azal Damirchizade, on physics Abasgulu Abbaszadeh, on mathematic Magsud Javadov, on chemistry Jumshud Zulfugarli, as well as academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR Mehdi Mehdizadeh, doctor of pedagogical sciences, Prof. Ahmad Seyidov, and Prof. Agammad Abdullayev have cooperated with the magazine. The Azerbaijan Mektebi magazine has played a significant role in delivering ideas of famous scientists, research teams, and the best teachers of the Union to the readers, as well as experiences in the new system at schools of the republic.  
Mirza Ibrahomov wrote, pointing the 40s of the XX century: “Then schools and teachers more than ever were needed the literature, especially newspaper and magazine that will regularly inform them on the education process. The spiritual need of teachers, all educators, their wish to learn deeply the pedagogical sciences, as well as the need for articles reflecting important issues of education, detailed information on school life made an urgent the establishment of a special magazine. As a result, the Azerbaijan Mektebi magazine was reestablished. In my opinion, during this period, the magazine has played a big role in developing of our pedagogical thinking, improving of education system and nurturing pedagogical personnel.” 
Later, the methodical journals on different disciplines began to be published. In the late 1940s and early 1950s of the last century, the magazine began to be published with some appendices. These methodical journals are always at the centre of attention as encyclopaedia articles of pedagogical and methodical knowledge. Some of them (“Primary school and pre-school education”, “Azeri language and literature teaching”, “Teaching of information science, mathematics and physics”) are still publishing.
In the first years of our independency, the Azerbaijan Mektebi magazine faced some problems and the threat of being shut down. However, after the great leader Heydar Aliyev return to power by the demand of people, the stability established in the country created conditions for the normal activity of pedagogical media, including the Azerbaijan Mektebi magazine. Today, the magazine makes contributions to the reform process implemented in the education system as much as possible. The main purpose of the magazine is to publish articles reflecting the attention and care of the government to the education system of the country.
The Azerbaijan Mektebi magazine is published 6 times per annum. The articles of the Education Minister Misir Mardanov are periodically published in the magazine. Mainly, the magazine publishes articles devoted to the educational reform. Moreover, responsible workers of the Ministry, rectors of universities, and other famous educators periodically publish their articles in the magazine and share their ideas and proposals with readers.
